Eckert Seamans Member William Hurd Named Among “Go To Lawyers” for Appellate Law by Virginia Lawyers Weekly

May 31, 2023

William Hurd, a Richmond-based Member with national law firm Eckert Seamans, has been named among the 2023 “Go To Lawyers” for Appellate Law by Virginia Lawyers Weekly. The publication’s “Go To Lawyers” program recognizes top lawyers in a particular practice area who are experts in his or her field; are experienced and have a record of success; are lawyers to whom other lawyers make referrals because of their expertise; and are lawyers who think creatively and identify all options for their clients.

Hurd focuses his practice on federal and state appellate litigation, complex and high-stakes issues, and government investigations. He served as the first solicitor general of Virginia from 1999-2004 and has represented businesses under investigation by state attorneys general across the nation. Hurd’s appellate victories cover a wide array of legal issues, including reversing the denial of a multimillion-dollar tax credit, securing educational benefits for children with disabilities, upholding statutory procedures for restoration of voting rights, upholding the “minute of silence” law for public schools, and preserving Sweet Briar College, among many others. He has also argued three cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, including his successful defense of a Virginia law banning cross-burning with intent to intimidate.

“The Richmond office is thrilled to congratulate Bill on this well-deserved honor,” said Matthew Kirsner, Member-In-Charge of Eckert Seamans’ Richmond office. “Bill is a standout attorney who brings a wealth of experience to our firm and is a valuable asset to his clients.”

Other accolades for Hurd include being recognized among The Best Lawyers in America for Appellate Practice and Education Law since 2007 and as a Super Lawyer in Virginia for Appellate Law since 2006.
