New Jersey to Expand Medical Marijuana Program
July 17, 2018
It was announced this week that New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration will issue six more permits to medical marijuana businesses to meet the surge in patient enrollment throughout the Garden State. All medical marijuana facilities in New Jersey must be vertically integrated – i.e., a permittee must cultivate, process and dispense medical marijuana within a single facility.
The request for applications was noticed July 16, 2018, and the deadline for submissions is August 31, 2018. All applicants must demonstrate they are capable of operating a dispensary and cultivation facility, provide evidence of site control, and verify they have municipal approval to operate a medical marijuana business. Applications must include a $20,000 application fee, $18,000 of which is refundable if the applicant is unsuccessful in obtaining a license. Medical marijuana businesses who have already been licensed by the state are not eligible to apply for an additional license.
Most importantly, all prospective applicants must attend a pre-application conference on Thursday, August 9, 2018, at the Department of Health headquarters in Trenton to discuss the expansion and ask questions regarding the permitting process. The Department will also accept questions submitted electronically until 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2018.
