DOT SUSPENDS COMMENT PERIOD ON TWO POTENTIAL REGULATIONS
March 6, 2017
On March 2, 2017, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT or the Department) announced that it is suspending the public comment period for two pending regulatory proceedings:
- First, DOT is suspending the public comment period for its Supplementary Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on “Transparency of Airline Ancillary Fees” which would have required airlines to display certain ancillary information through the GDS/travel agent channel.
- Second, the Department is suspending the public comment period for its Request for Information (RFI) on “Exploring Industry Practices on Distribution and Display of Airline Fare, Schedule and Availability Information” which sought information on the display of fare and availability information through indirect channels (travel agents, Metasearch etc.).
According to DOT the reasoning for the suspension is to provide President Trump’s appointees the opportunity to review the proposed regulations for consideration. At this moment both potential rulemakings are on an indefinite hold. We will continue to monitor this development and notify you should new information arise.
