Eckert Seamans Mourns Daniel C. Abeles

Daniel C. Abeles, a member of Eckert Seamans’ intellectual property group, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2018, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“Dan was the consummate professional and was known for his graciousness, generosity, wit, and wisdom,” said firm CEO Timothy Q. Hudak. “Eckert Seamans has lost a great friend and dear colleague.”

During his distinguished 49-year legal career, Mr. Abeles negotiated domestic and international licenses, technology transfer and joint venture agreements, as well as intellectual property terms in government contracts. On behalf of clients, he regularly worked with the U.S. Department of Energy in obtaining both identified and advanced waivers of the government’s title to patents and other deviations to the government’s standard terms. Mr. Abeles also prepared and prosecuted patent applications involving a wide range of technologies in the mechanical and electrical arts, and obtained broad software protection in control and monitoring applications.

Before joining the firm in 1997, Mr. Abeles served as assistant general counsel and department manager for Westinghouse Electric Company. He led a law department of intellectual property lawyers representing nuclear, power generation, environmental, and government services businesses, managing a patent portfolio with an annual budget of more than $4 million.

Active in the profession, Mr. Abeles previously served as President of the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association. He earned his J.D. from the Brooklyn Law School in 1969 and an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the City College of New York in 1967.

Mr. Abeles is survived by his wife Rosemary and daughter Sara. 

Funeral arrangements are as follows: the viewing will be held at Pantalone Funeral Home (409 West Pittsburgh Street, Greensburg, PA 15601) on Monday, July 23 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
