Spotlight on . . . Tara Lattomus

Tara Lattomus has been practicing law in the firm’s Delaware office since it opened its doors in 2005. Since the office started small, Tara had the opportunity to practice in a number of areas and continues to keep her diversified practice to this day. She was born to British parents in England and lived there until she was 10 years old. Her family then moved to Delaware, and other than a brief stay in Pennsylvania, she’s called Delaware home ever since. She attended middle school and high school in Smyrna and today lives in Wilmington just a few minutes from the office. She has two daughters, Emily (22) and Anna (19). Tara also has two corgis named Winston and Yogi, and a cat named Hannah Montana, which she assures us is not a typo. This summer Tara hopes to go on her bucket list trip to Africa.
Tara helps clients negotiate hotel and resort management agreements with an eye towards avoiding future disputes and litigation. Tara’s experience allows her to understand the range of issues that can arise in the context of both new-build and transitioning properties and draft agreements that provide her clients with the broadest protections. She also routinely advises clients involved in bankruptcy cases, and on occasion, assists with litigation matters.
Q&A
What led you to pursue a career in law?
I was working as a paralegal and decided that I could be a lawyer, so I did it.
What do you enjoy most about your practice?
There’s something new every day. I work on hotel and resort management agreements for properties around the world and even though in many cases we start with form agreements, it always surprises me how the same provision can be interpreted in a way I never considered.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
This might still be the case; an auto mechanic!
What makes you laugh?
My daughter Emily. She just says the funniest things out of the blue. One day (a long time ago), she sent me a text that said “apparently Kenya is not a continent.” We still laugh about that.
Who or what inspires you?
Just a general goal of trying to be better today than I was yesterday in all areas of life.
What is a book you think everyone should read?
My favorite book is Stephen King’s Dark Tower series which is actually seven books. The movie is no comparison. It’s probably not for everyone, but I read a lot and love to get lost in a story.
What do you like to do on the weekends?
My happy place is the beach. I could sit on the beach all day with a good book. Under an umbrella of course!
In view of Women’s History Month, who is a woman you admire and why?
I greatly admire Katherine Johnson, the NASA engineer featured in the movie Hidden Figures. She had to overcome so many barriers but managed to become such an integral part of the NASA space program.
