Deborah S. Baird

Deb Baird is a civil litigator with over 35 years of experience. She regularly defends health care institutions, physicians, nurses, and other health care providers in professional liability cases from discovery and pretrial matters, to motion practice, settlement negotiations, trial preparation, and assistance at trial. Deb has also handled product liability matters and has been personal counsel to physicians and their practices.

Deb understands the sensitive, personal nature of professional liability allegations and is skilled at defending our clients – whose reputations and livelihoods are at stake. The most daunting obstacle to defending professional liability claims is often negotiating the “expectation gap” between a fact finders’ perception of a professional’s responsibilities and the responsibilities required by the profession. Deb is very skilled in educating the fact finder—judge, jury, mediator, or administrative authorities—to understand the legal duties and standards of performance governing our client’s professional practice. To accomplish this educational process, she works to craft compelling and effective defense strategies and tactics, applying understandable terms to explain sophisticated concepts. Deb also counsels health care providers and institutions in all aspects of hospital information management processes, including records retention, discovery issues, and audit trails, with an eye toward limiting professional liability claims. Deb is also very skilled at working with all types of expert witnesses to prepare the most effective defense possible for her clients.

In addition, Deb is a member of the Eckert Seamans’ Pro Bono Committee and is one of the Philadelphia office’s pro bono liaisons. She has been a member of the Board of Directors and has held leadership positions for several local non profit organizations.
