Spotlight on . . . Michael Herzog

Mike Herzog joined the firm’s Pittsburgh office in 2000 and this year joined the Board of Directors. He grew up in Smithtown, on the North Shore of Long Island. Today, he lives in Franklin Park with his wife Beth and 9-year-old son Preston and 6½-year-old daughter Payton.

Mike concentrates his law practice on a variety of tax matters and employee benefits counseling. His tax practice is informed by his experience as a CPA. He assists clients with the tax implications of business formations, restructurings, divestitures, mergers and acquisitions, and international transactions. Mike also advises clients on multistate tax matters, handles federal, state, and local tax controversies as well as the drafting of technical tax memoranda, tax return compliance, and tax return reviews. Mike also assists clients with securing federal and state tax incentives for the production and conservation of energy and natural resources, due diligence reviews, technical research, and the formation of nonprofit entities. Within his employee benefits practice, Mike advises clients on tax-qualified retirement plans, executive compensation matters, the tax implications of a variety of employee welfare benefit programs, and assists clients with their employee benefit plan regulatory tax compliance requirements.

Q&A

What led you to pursue a career in law?

In my prior professional career, I was a CPA at a Big Six accounting firm and through various tax-related engagements, I decided to pursue a career as a tax attorney.

What do you enjoy most about your practice?

The diversity, challenges, and evolution of the ever-changing tax code. Each day brings new and unique matters for consideration and resolution.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A lifeguard at an ocean beach.

What makes you laugh?

The movie “Caddyshack”.

What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

Golfing, Penn State football, and coaching youth sports.

What’s something on your bucket list?

Playing golf at the St. Andrews Golf Club in Scotland.
