Eckert Seamans Attorneys Serve as ALI-ABA Internet Law Seminar Faculty
The national law firm of Eckert Seamans Cherin and Mellott, LLC today
announced that attorneys Roberta Jacobs-Meadway and Richard E.
Peirce recently served as faculty for the American Law Institute-American
Bar Association (“ALI-ABA”) live video webcast, Hot Topics in Internet
Law for Business Lawyers: Don't Get Caught in the 'Net, on June 3,
2008.
Ms. Jacobs-Meadway presented the “OPM - Other People's Marks” session, in
which she discussed such intellectual property issues as buying another's mark
as an advertising key word, using another's mark in meta-tags or in a url
address, and whether these actions are considered violations in the virtual
world or in a foreign jurisdiction.
Mr. Peirce presented the “Frauds, Scams and Squatters” session, which
examined the latest schemes coming out of scammers' basements and from overseas,
as well as strategies for dealing with phishing, pharming, splash sites and
"friendly" warnings and offers.
Ms. Jacobs-Meadway focuses her practice on trademark, copyright, unfair
competition law and related licensing and litigation in the federal courts and
before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. She has also served as
mediator in numerous trademark and copyright disputes. Frequently praised
for her expertise in the discipline of intellectual property law, Ms.
Jacobs-Meadway has been recognized by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers
for Business as one of the “Leaders in Their Field” in the area of
intellectual property law in the 2003 through 2007 editions. She is ranked
in the top tier of intellectual property attorneys in Pennsylvania and is referred to as “the preeminent
trademark attorney in Pennsylvania.” The publication also wrote,
“According to interviewees ‘no one in the city knows more about copyright’ than
Roberta Jacobs-Meadway.” She has also been honored by Law & Politics
Magazine and Philadelphia Magazine among the “Top 50 Women
Pennsylvania Super Lawyers” and is also a “Pennsylvania Super Lawyer” in the
area of intellectual property law for 2007. Law Business Research
Ltd. named her to the “International Who’s Who of Trademark Lawyers.” Ms.
Jacobs-Meadway earned her law degree from Rutgers University of School of Law
and her undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr
College.
Mr. Peirce concentrates his practice on trademark, cybersquatting and unfair
competition issues. In addition, he has advised clients on various issues
relating to doing business on the internet including domain name registration
strategy for new products and services, policing brand abuse and domain name
registration scams, online copyright infringement, and web site linking.
Mr. Peirce has also negotiated and drafted trademark licenses, domain name
transfer agreements and other internet related documents. He has litigated
trademark and unfair competition issues in the federal courts and before the
Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Mr. Peirce has also handled domain name
disputes under ICANN’s Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy and under
other domain name dispute resolution polices. He received his J.D. from
the Syracuse University College of Law, cum laude, and his undergraduate
degree from Rowan
University, cum
laude. He is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania and before the U.S. District
Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Court of Appeals for
the Third Circuit.
