Eckert Seamans Announces Attorney Promotions
The national law firm of Eckert Seamans Cherin and Mellott, LLC is very
pleased to announce that attorneys Michael J. Herzog, Mark A.
Johnston and Laura G. Stover were promoted to
Members, effective April 4, 2008.
Michael Herzog, a Member in the firm’s Pittsburgh office, focuses his practice in the
areas of tax and employee benefit counseling. He has assisted clients in
formations, acquisitions, distributions and business reorganizations involving
corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies. Mr. Herzog has
advised individuals, business owners and executives in various aspects of
federal, state and local taxation including client representation before a
variety of taxing jurisdictions. He has also formed non-profit entities,
assisted clients to remain compliant with tax-exempt laws and resolved tax
controversies for non-profit entities. Mr. Herzog’s employee benefits
practice has a concentration on qualified pension, profit sharing and 401(k)
savings plans in addition to counseling clients on tax issues relative to
compensation. Mr. Herzog is also a certified public accountant. Mr.
Herzog earned his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law,
cum laude, and his undergraduate degree from The Pennsylvania State
University. He is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Mark Johnston, a Member in the firm’s Washington, DC
office, focuses his practice on complex civil litigation, including products
liability, construction and surety litigation, lead paint, trademark litigation,
insurance coverage, employment discrimination, as well as commercial litigation
including business torts and contract disputes. He has represented clients
in various state and Federal courts at the trial and appellate levels, and
before state and federal administrative agencies. Mr. Johnston’s
experience includes representing commercial airlines in trademark litigation
before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), as well as
commercial and employment litigation in Federal courts. He has defended
insurance companies in direct action suits in various jurisdictions throughout
the country, and regularly advises insurance companies in trademark and coverage
matters. Mr. Johnston has also successfully defended elevator and
escalator, automotive and heavy industrial equipment manufacturers in numerous
products liability cases. Mr. Johnston’s substantial commercial litigation
experience has included representing various business entities including
manufacturers, hotel management companies, a media brokerage firm and a national
recruitment firm. He has successfully litigated cases involving a wide
spectrum of commercial claims including breach of contract, fraudulent
conveyance, unfair business practices, tortious interference, and unlawful
disclosure of trade secrets. In addition, Mr. Johnston regularly counsels
and advises businesses on labor and employment matters. Mr. Johnston has
also defended and counseled foreign governments in cases brought under the
Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA) in Federal court, and in appeals before
the U.S. Courts of Appeals. Mr. Johnston earned his law degree from the
Tulane University School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Lafayette College. He is admitted to practice
in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
Laura Stover, a Member in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, focuses her practice on complex
commercial litigation and appellate advocacy. Her practice involves
commercial litigation in the aviation industry, insurance, bankruptcy and lender
liability, as well as products liability, employment litigation, franchise and
hospitality industry issues. Ms. Stover has successfully represented
clients in insurance coverage litigation, suits under the Foreign Sovereign
Immunities Act and in class actions against foreign airlines at both trial and
appellate levels. She is also a key member of the litigation team
successfully defending insurers in “direct action” asbestos cases, where
plaintiffs are attempting to impose new duties on insurers in jurisdictions
across the country. She also represents clients in alternative dispute
resolution such as arbitrations and private and court directed mediation.
Ms. Stover earned her law degree from the George Washington University Law School and her undergraduate degree from
University of South Carolina Honors College, cum laude. She is
admitted to practice in the District of
Columbia and Maryland.
