Jay K. Meadway is a Member of the firm in the Litigation Division. His practice focuses on foreign trademark protection. Fluent in German, Mr. Meadway represents companies and law firms in trademark matters in Europe, Japan and elsewhere.Prior to joining Eckert Seamans, Mr. Meadway was a partner at a Philadelphia-based national law firm, where he concentrated in international trademark practice and other areas of trademark, copyright, and unfair competition law. Mr. Meadway has also served as an in-house trademark attorney for Pfizer, Inc., with primary responsibility for the worldwide portfolio of consumer products trademarks.
The author of numerous articles for business and trade publications, Mr. Meadway co-authored a chapter on damages in copyright cases for Matthew Bender's treatise Intellectual Property Counseling and Litigation. In addition, Mr. Meadway has lectured to bar associations and other groups on issues in the protection of clients' international trademark portfolios, and has taught as an adjunct professor of business law at Marymount College of Manhattan. He has been a featured speaker at two Business Lawyers' Institute conferences sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Institute. He has also served as a lecturer at ALI-ABA seminars on the subjects of prosecution of U.S. trademark applications and trademarks in cross-border transactions.
Notably, in 2007, Mr. Meadway served as a member of the U.S. delegation of the International Judicial Academy (IJA), which travelled to Argentina to present seminars in Buenos Aires and other cities to local judges on intellectual property law. The delegation consisted of U.S. federal judges and one other private practitioner. The IJA was established to provide educational programs for judges, court administrators and justice ministry officials from countries around the world, providing instruction on how all court personnel should function in a modern, fair, efficient, accessible and transparent court system.
Mr. Meadway is listed in the 2005 through 2008 editions of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Business Lawyers as “Leaders in Their Field” in the area of intellectual property. He’s also been recognized by his peers as one of Pennsylvania’s Super Lawyers® each year from 2006 to 2008, ranking among the top five percent of attorneys practicing in the state. He holds an AV® rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
He is a member of the American, New York, Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Bar associations, and the International Trademark Association (INTA). As a member of INTA, he is active within its committees on Asian legislation, regulatory analysis for Asian countries and the efforts to harmonize the intellectual property laws in the ASEAN and APEC member countries.
Mr. Meadway also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Women's Law Project, a nonprofit organization that seeks to advance the legal, social, and economic status of women through litigation, public policy advocacy, public education and individual counseling.
