Edward J. Longosz, II is a Member in the Litigation Division and is Member-In-Charge of the Eckert Seamans Washington, D.C. office. Mr. Longosz has a local and nationwide practice with a broad range of experience in complex civil litigation including business torts, insurance coverage, contract disputes, agency disputes and bad faith cases, as well as defense of toxic torts, HIV blood transfusion litigation, asbestos, lead paint, product liability and medical malpractice.
He has provided litigation representation, advice and counsel to both large and small companies and trade associations. He has represented clients in various state and federal courts throughout the country and in arbitrations and mediations. He has served as lead counsel in various insurance contract and coverage matters, including, e.g., leading the way to the acceptance of the defense of constructive fraud for insurance companies as a defense to consent judgment actions by insureds. His experience also includes, by way of example, defending a national trade association in HIV blood transfusion cases, representing the second largest elevator company in the world in product liability matters; representing insurance companies in connection with coverage opinions, contractual claims, bad faith and fraud claims; defending asbestos exposure cases and providing litigation avoidance advice. His practice also has included serving as lead trial counsel in the successful defense and dismissal of plaintiff’s claims in a breach of contract and trade secret case which involved complex business and financial issues. On behalf of the same client, he was successful in prosecuting a counter-claim in that case which resulted in a substantial multi-million dollar award.
Mr. Longosz has served as a mediator and arbitrator for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, and Neutral Evaluator and Mediator for the Office of the Circuit Executive, United States District Court for the District of Columbia Circuit. He has successfully argued motions and appeals in many state and federal courts. He has been a guest speaker at various conventions and industry meetings in the areas of product liability and medical malpractice. He has also served as an expert witness on behalf of insurance companies, and regularly participates in seminars and lectures for various insurance companies, corporations and self-insureds on insurance coverage, bad faith and litigation related topics.
Mr. Longosz is the past president of the District of Columbia Defense Lawyers Association. He is also a member and has been an active participant in the District of Columbia Bar; Bar Association for the District of Columbia; The Defense Research Institute; National Institute for Trial Advocacy, 1988; American Bar Association, ABA Torts and Insurance Practice Section and Committees on Liability and Manufacturers and Self-insureds; DRI National Committee Legislative Member; Bar Leadership Member, D.C. Bar; Northern Virginia Defense Lawyers; Virginia Association of Defense Lawyers; Fairfax County Bar Association; Virginia State Bar Association; Maryland State Bar Association.
