Peter J. Hoffman is a Member of the firm’s Litigation Division, and was a Shareholder in the firm McKissock & Hoffman, P.C.
Mr. Hoffman’s practice includes handling complex cases such as antitrust, securities, class action, creditor's rights, commercial litigation, ERISA and real estate litigation. He has practiced before a number of administrative agencies including the State Tax Equalization Board, Insurance Department and Medical Board.
He devotes a substantial portion of his practice to professional liability - primarily medical malpractice and legal malpractice, commercial litigation, construction, products liability, toxic torts and insurance coverage.
Mr. Hoffman was awarded the 1989 Fred H. Sievert Outstanding Defense Bar Leader Award by the Defense Research Institute. This award recognized his "outstanding efforts to advance the goals and objectives of the organized defense trial bar, including the preservation of the civil jury trial and the promotion of fairness and balance in the civil justice system." He has been recognized by his peers as one of Pennsylvania’s Super Lawyers® each year from 2004 to 2008, ranking among the top five percent of attorneys practicing in the state. Mr. Hoffman has also been listed in the Best Lawyers in America since 1995.
Mr. Hoffman is a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers (IATL). Membership in the Academy is by invitation only and is limited to 500 trial lawyers throughout the world. The International Academy of Trial Lawyers is engaged in programs to cultivate the science of jurisprudence, promote reforms in the law, facilitate the admission of justice and elevate the standards of integrity, honor and courtesy in the legal profession.
He is also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, (ACTL). Membership in the College, which is by invitation only, is limited to those trial lawyers who are outstanding and are considered to be the best in the states and provinces in which they practice. High ethical and moral standards and excellent character are indispensable attributes of a Fellow.
Additionally, Mr. Hoffman is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). The 5,000 plus "by invitation only" organization seeks only attorneys who display skill, civility and integrity to help younger attorneys achieve a higher level of trial advocacy and to educate the public about the vital importance of the Seventh Amendment.
Mr. Hoffman is a member of the Defense Research Institute, American, Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia Bar Associations, American Hospital Association, ASHRM, HAP, PSHRM, American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics and the Temple Inn of Court. He is also active in the Pennsylvania Defense Institute. (Board of Directors 1980-1984; Vice President 1984-1987; President Elect 1987; President 1988; Chairman Professional Liability Committee 1980-1987; 1990.) He has lectured for the Defense Research Institute, Philadelphia Bar Association, Pennsylvania Defense Institute, Pennsylvania Bar Institute, and the Pennsylvania Trial Attorney Association.
Mr. Hoffman was also a member of the Pennsylvania Senate Select Committee on Medical Malpractice, and Governor Rendell's Task Force on Medical Malpractice. Peter was also a Hearing Committee Member for the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He is on the adjunct faculty of the Temple University School of Law, Academy of Advocacy and the Temple University School of Law Master's of Law in Trial Advocacy. Peter also has served as a Judge Pro Tempore in the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County.
