Daniel C. Abeles is a Member of the firm, and has a broad transactional practice with extensive experience in the area of Intellectual Property Law. He formerly served as Assistant General Counsel and Department Manager for a Fortune 100 company, and managed a law department group of intellectual property lawyers representing nuclear, power generation, environmental and government services businesses, as well as managing a patent portfolio having an annual budget in excess of $4 million. He has considerable experience in negotiating domestic and international licenses, technology transfer and joint venture agreements, as well as intellectual property terms in government contracts.
He has extensive experience working with the U.S. Department of Energy, and has been successful in obtaining both identified and advanced waivers of the government's title to patents and other deviations to the government's standard terms to meet specific client needs.
Mr. Abeles has lectured extensively before purchasing and contracts organizations, empowering them with an underlying understanding of intellectual property issues they face on a daily basis. He has been instrumental in setting up worldwide cost-effective patent strategies with a focus on obtaining a commercial return. He has also participated in negotiations involving a large number of acquisitions and divestitures, and has managed and conducted due diligence investigations involving the intellectual property assets of the acquired companies.
He has participated in the strategic planning processes of the clients he has represented, and has been effective in identifying and obtaining conceptual protection for the future evolution of their products and the direction of their markets. He has prepared and prosecuted patent applications involving a wide range of technologies in the mechanical and electrical arts, and has been effective in obtaining broad software protection in control and monitoring applications.
