Grace Lee, Former First Deputy Treasurer and General Counsel of the Massachusetts State Treasury, Joins Eckert Seamans’ Boston Office

Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott, LLC, a full-service national law firm, is pleased to announce the addition of Special Counsel Grace H. Lee to the Boston office. Lee concentrates her practice in the areas of bonds, financing, labor and employment and white collar criminal defense.

Prior to joining Eckert Seamans, Lee served as First Deputy Treasurer and General Counsel for the Massachusetts State Treasury. Lee was the first Asian American in the history of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to serve as First Deputy Treasurer, and she also was the first Asian American in Massachusetts to serve as chief legal counsel to a statewide officeholder.

“We’re very pleased to have Grace Lee share her considerable experience of bringing order and structure to complex issues to Eckert Seamans. We are confident that the respect and praise Grace achieved for her work in the public sector will translate seamlessly to assisting the firm’s clients, particularly in the municipal finance area,” said Peter F. Carr, II, Member-in-Charge of the firm’s Boston office.

As First Deputy Treasurer, Lee was responsible for the management and oversight of the Massachusetts State Treasury, and she was statutorily authorized to assume the responsibilities of the State Treasurer in his absence or designation. Lee oversaw the operations of the Treasury and its divisions, such as Cash Management, Debt Management, Abandoned Property, Water Pollution Abatement Trust, and Administration and Finance. Additionally, as a distinguished member of the Massachusetts Bar, Lee was responsible for managing the legal affairs of the Treasury, including matters such as compliance with state and federal regulations and statutes, drafting policies, and managing litigation by outside counsels and agencies.

In addition to serving as First Deputy Treasurer and General Counsel, Lee served as Interim Executive Director to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Asian American Commission, a permanent body dedicated to political advocacy on behalf of Asian Americans throughout Massachusetts.
